The Insect Rings are a project I began creating when my grandpa started falling ill. They were born from a mix of one of the most magical memories of my childhood, a mountain hike with my grandpa on Midsummer Night to a meadow filled with fireflies and the giant dragonflies that visit his garden.
The dragonfly became the heart. However, as the project evolved, other insects began to emerge as well.
As a child, I listened to the spontaneous fairy tales my grandpa would weave for me. Every story started: "Long, long ago, far beyond mountains that stood behind other mountains, and those behind yet more mountains, where stones rolled uphill and rivers flowed toward the peaks..."
In these pieces, I replaced the dragonflies' abdomens with sculptures of human fingers - my symbol of agency, representing our power to act and shape reality. He wove the myths, I use my hands to carve them into existence.
Grandpa IS the Magical Being.
